I grew up and was born in a lowly and very disorganized setting where poverty, alcoholism, and drug abuse were the order of the day. There were lots of days I went to school without breakfast or lunch and my family once had to depend on the goodwill of neighbours and the help of our church to live. Even amid these sufferings, I felt that education was my way to the better life. Keratoconus is the most challenging experience in my life as I was diagnosed with it, and it pretty much impaired my vision and almost terminated my academic career. With the assistance of Edu Afya, I received life transforming eye operations and proceeded with the education.
I am currently studying medicine in Maseno University. Nevertheless, I am financially challenged and I am among the best students in my medical class. The issue of medical school cost is however a big problem and unless I am provided with financial aid I fear I might not even be able to write my end-year exams.
I aspire to be a practitioner in the field of medicine and a beneficiary to the vulnerable groups such as the one I was brought up in. I wish to create a platform where the less fortunate youth are empowered, libraries and resource centers are established and that rehabilitation is provided to the addict. I would like my trip to demonstrate that even under the darkest conditions, all can work out to bring hope of a better future because of perseverance and faith.
