Joel Wafula Barasa
I grew up in a poor family where basic needs were never guaranteed. My parents struggled to provide food, school fees, and clothing, so I learned responsibility at a young age. I often walked long distances to school and studied without proper materials. Sometimes I missed classes to help at home or find small jobs. These experiences taught me resilience, patience, and the value of hard work. Despite challenges, I remained hopeful and focused on education as a path to a better future. Living through hardship shaped my character and strengthened my determination to succeed in life every single day.
The most difficult experience in my life was when my family could not afford school fees, and I had to stay home while others continued learning. It was painful watching my dreams feel delayed and uncertain. During that time, I learned the importance of perseverance, patience, and never giving up despite challenges. It also taught me to value education deeply and to work hard whenever I get an opportunity, knowing how easily it can be taken away.
I felt especially proud of myself when I managed to return to school after a long break caused by financial struggles. Despite the challenges, I worked hard, caught up with my studies, and performed well in my exams. That moment showed me my strength, resilience, and determination to overcome obstacles and continue pursuing my dreams.
The most memorable and happiest moment in my life was when I successfully completed my studies KCSE despite many challenges. Seeing my efforts pay off brought me great joy and pride. It was a special moment not only for me but also for my family, who had supported and believed in me throughout the journey.
My dream is to pursue my education up to a Master’s degree and eventually reach PhD level. I aim to achieve this by working hard in my studies, seeking scholarships, and staying focused on my goals. I will remain disciplined, make use of every learning opportunity, and never give up despite challenges until I reach my academic dreams.
After achieving my dream of reaching Master’s and PhD level, I will support my family by improving our living standards and ensuring access to education and basic needs. I will help my community by mentoring young people, supporting education initiatives, and creating opportunities for growth. I will also give back to WEF by contributing to its programs, sharing my experience, and supporting other students to achieve their dreams.
If I had the power to change my country, Kenya, I would focus on improving access to quality education and creating more job opportunities for young people. I would also fight corruption and ensure equal distribution of resources so that everyone benefits. Strengthening healthcare and supporting small businesses would help reduce poverty and improve living standards across the country.
Your beginnings do not define your future; your determination does. Every challenge you face is shaping you into a stronger, wiser person. Keep pushing forward, even when the path is difficult, because success is built through persistence and courage. Believe in your dreams, work hard every day, and never give up your story has the power to inspire change and create a better life for yourself and others.
